The King Who Will Not Grasp

The King Who Will Not Grasp

What happens when the person who has made your life difficult suddenly lies within your power? In 1 Samuel 24:1-22, David encounters Saul in a cave and faces an opportunity that his companions believe God has provided.

Beginning with a surprising moment in Disney’s 2015 Cinderella, this sermon explores the freedom to refuse revenge. David’s response teaches us to test our interpretation of circumstances, welcome friends who speak honestly, and pursue truth and accountability without taking vengeance into our own hands. Mercy does not require renewed access or unsafe proximity.

David still needs God’s correction, and his story points us to Jesus, the perfectly obedient King. Through His death and resurrection, guilty people receive forgiveness and wounded people find hope in righteous judgment. On Thanksgiving weekend, we consider how receiving Christ’s grace frees us to trust God with the future and take the next faithful step.

The King Who Will Not Grasp is part of Hudson’s Hope Chapel’s series After God’s Own Heart, preached October 11, 2026.
