Why can we recognize the goodness of help for someone else, yet feel embarrassed when we need it ourselves?
David is living in the wilderness while Saul pursues him. God has chosen him to be king, but the danger continues. Then Jonathan comes to him and strengthens his hand in God.
In 1 Samuel 23:13-29, we see friendship that takes initiative, values God’s purpose above personal position, and offers hope grounded in His promises. Jonathan cannot end David’s uncertainty, but his presence and encouragement matter. Later, an ordinary-looking interruption becomes the means of David’s escape.
This passage helps us receive support without shame and offer care without promising outcomes God has not guaranteed.
David’s story leads us to Jesus, the faithful King who gives His life for our sins and rises from the dead. He holds His people for eternal life. His love gives us confidence when tomorrow is unclear and something solid to share with those who need encouragement.
