Strengthened by a Friend

Strengthened by a Friend

David is chosen to be king, yet he lives in the wilderness while Saul pursues him. In 1 Samuel 23:13-29, Jonathan comes to strengthen his friend in God, and an unexpected interruption becomes the means of David’s escape.

In Week 5 of After God’s Own Heart, we consider friendship that takes initiative, accepts personal cost, and points towards God’s promises. A brief return to Mephibosheth shows how David later honours his covenant with Jonathan. We explore why receiving help can feel difficult and how listening, prayer, and faithful presence can sustain someone whose circumstances remain unchanged.

The passage also teaches gratitude for God’s care through ordinary events without promising that every crisis will end in a last-minute rescue. David’s story leads us to Jesus, the faithful King who bears our sins, rises from the dead, and holds His people for eternal life.

This message offers encouragement for those living with prolonged uncertainty and those seeking to care for them. We cannot repair everything for one another, but we can come alongside each other and look together to the Lord who holds us.
