Gabriel’s Announcements: Fear Not
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and Joseph with news that would disrupt their entire lives, his first words were “Fear not.” This sermon explores how two ordinary people from Nazareth responded to God’s impossible call with faith and what that teaches us about trusting God’s character when obedience gets costly.
Drawing from Luke 1:26-38 and Matthew 1:18-25, this message examines three critical truths about biblical faith. First, God’s call to Mary was grounded in centuries of fulfilled prophecy—the promise was never guesswork. Every phrase Gabriel spoke echoed specific Old Testament promises, reminding Mary that the God who calls is the God who keeps His word. Second, Mary and Joseph demonstrated ordinary obedience in extraordinary circumstances. Mary’s “Let it be to me according to your word” and Joseph’s immediate action after his dream reveal the difference between honest questions and skeptical resistance. Third, God’s “fear not” is never about the absence of danger but the presence of God. The name Immanuel—God with us—transforms everything.
This sermon challenges listeners to anchor their obedience in God’s proven track record, find trusted community to support costly decisions, and depend on the Holy Spirit’s power rather than their own strength. Through the opening illustration of Dietrich Bonhoeffer choosing to return to Nazi Germany in 1939, the message demonstrates what faith looks like when God’s call collides with human plans. Practical applications include writing down one promise God has already kept, finding an “Elizabeth” to share your yes with, and praying daily for the Spirit to empower obedience where you fear.
