In this opening sermon from After God’s Own Heart, we consider the phrase Scripture uses to describe David before he is even named.
Saul faces a genuine crisis in 1 Samuel 13. As fear increases and his people scatter, he allows his own judgment to overrule God’s command. His failure raises a question for every act of faith: when our instincts and God’s Word point in different directions, who has the final word?
God responds by announcing the king He has sought for Himself. David’s calling begins with grace rather than spiritual achievement, and his life will show that grace repeatedly turning a wandering heart home without minimizing sin, harm, or accountability.
Acts 13 then leads beyond David to Jesus, the perfectly faithful Son of David. David can serve God’s purpose, but only the crucified and risen King can forgive, justify, and save.
