The Church’s Most Important Guest

The Church’s Most Important Guest

In this sermon from John 14:15-27, we consider Jesus’ promise that He will not leave His disciples as orphans.

After finishing a series through Hebrews and before several weeks of guest preachers, this message asks a deeper question: who is leading the church? Jesus answers by promising the Holy Spirit, the Helper and Spirit of truth, who dwells with Christ’s people and makes Christ known through Christ’s Word.

This sermon also clarifies what the Spirit’s ministry is not. It is not a call to follow our feelings, chase private impressions, or seek new revelation apart from Scripture. The Spirit brings Christ’s words to bear on Christ’s people and ministers the peace of Christ in the middle of changing circumstances.
