The Spear in the Room

Someone else receives praise, and suddenly we feel smaller. Why can another person’s good news be so difficult to hear?

In 1 Samuel 18:6-16, we consider both the envy we need to confess and the hostility we may need help to face. David continues serving while the Lord remains with him. Refusing revenge does not mean remaining within reach of harm; seeking safety, telling the truth, and asking for protection can be faithful acts.
David’s story leads us to Jesus, the rejected King who bears our sins and rises from the dead. His grace gives believers a secure welcome that someone else’s success cannot diminish. We can celebrate another person’s gifts, repent honestly, and take the next faithful step with His help.
